Restorative Dentistry Q&A
Learn more about your restorative dental options with answers to these common questions many of our patients may have:
How do implant-secured restorations compare to removable restorations?
Dental implants provide longevity and durability to dental bridges and dentures. This is because they fuse with the jawbone during a process called osseointegration. This period typically takes 3 to 6 months. Once the implant fuses with the tissue of the jawbone, it becomes a part of the smile. We also cap off implants with crowns or durable prosthetics made of high-quality materials. Removable dentures and bridges lay on top of the gums. They do not support the health of the teeth and gums. Implants restore teeth at their root and act just like natural teeth.
What are the earliest signs of gum disease?
Gum disease is a bacterial infection that begins with gum inflammation. Aside from inflammation, patients may have swollen, red, and sensitive gums. Oftentimes, many patients will experience bleeding when they brush or floss. These are the earliest indicators of gum disease and are also known as gingivitis. However, gum inflammation, or gingivitis, may be reversed with a good oral hygiene routine and regular dental visits.
How do I know if I have a TMJ disorder, and how can I treat it?
Temporomandibular joint disorders are bite disorders caused by the joints that connect the jawbone to the skull. These important joints aid in chewing and speaking. Stress, damage, or pressure on these joints can cause a variety of problems in the face, jaw, and teeth. Common TMJ symptoms include teeth clenching and grinding, jaw and facial pain, chronic headaches, tooth wear, and difficulty biting and chewing comfortably.
For patients who grind and clench their teeth as a result of TMJ disorder, we will recommend a nightguard. This oral appliance covers and protects the teeth from further wear. It also alleviates pressure from the TMJ and rests the muscles of the face and jaw. We may also recommend physical therapy for TMJ patients. During physical therapy, patients learn exercises and techniques to alleviate TMJ dysfunction and even relax the muscles in their back, neck, and shoulders.
